Qinhuai Data's 220kV substation put into operation in 6 months, setting a new record for data center industry delivery

On February 13, Qinhuai Data Group's Lingqiu 220kV substation project in Shanxi officially went into operation. The project took only 6 months from the start of construction to commissioning, setting a new record for the data center industry. The substation that was put into operation this time provides a power supply capacity of 360MW for Qinhuai Data's largest single-site data center in Asia Pacific, providing strong support for the safe operation of the business and laying a solid foundation for the future sustainable development of the largest single-site data center in Asia Pacific.

According to Zhang Binghua, Chief Technology Officer of Qinhuai Data Group, The Qinhuai Lingqiu 220kV substation uses a self-developed high-impedance split-winding transformer patented technology. While ensuring reliable power supply, it eliminates the 110kV voltage level, reduces primary voltage transformation, and achieves high-capacity power directly stepping down from 220kV to 10kV load power supply. This is the first backbone network patent in the data center industry; Compared with the traditional two-stage transformer scheme, it reduces the footprint by about 60%, significantly reduces construction costs, improves power conversion efficiency, and has excellent economic benefits. At the same time, the substation adopts modular technology, and factory prefabrication strictly controls product quality, greatly shortening the construction period and making agile delivery of the substation possible. The successful implementation of this technology has extremely high reference significance for the design and construction of ultra-large-scale data centers and is suitable for various large-scale data center self-owned substation projects. The patented technology fills the gap in the data center industry.

Given the complexity and particularity of the 220kV power transmission and transformation project, the project team and all participating parties closely coordinated to overcome many factors such as the foundation treatment in the collapsible loess area, the excavation of the foundation pit during the rainy season, and the winter construction in the permafrost area, completing the project delivery in just 6 months. The project received guidance and support from the governments at all levels of Datong City and Lingqiu County. More than 20 preliminary procedures were completed within 2 months, solving many difficulties such as cargo transportation during the epidemic and COVID-19 infection among on-site personnel, providing guarantee services for the early delivery of the project.

At the same time, the State Grid Shanxi Province and Datong City power companies guided the project plan formulation, power transmission and transformation engineering construction, and load switching, minimizing the impact of construction on the normal production and operation of the enterprise, organizing multiple batches of experts for on-site acceptance and guidance, and playing a decisive role in the smooth implementation of the project.

The successful operation of the 220kV substation has improved the power supply stability and reliability of Qinhuai Data's largest single-site data center in Asia Pacific.

Qinhuai Data's Capital Ring-Taihang Mountain Energy Information Technology Industrial Base is one of the first national-level and the first provincial-level new data centers in Shanxi, and also the largest single-site data center in Asia Pacific. The base will efficiently transform Shanxi's energy advantages into computing power advantages, supporting the digital computing power needs of Shanxi and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, promoting the leapfrog transformation of Shanxi's digital economy, and making positive contributions to Shanxi's active integration into the national "East Digital West Computing" strategy and the construction of the national hub node of the national integrated big data center.
